  2. The Invention of Chemical Symbols • The Swedish chemist Jons Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848) was the first to propose, in 1817, the system of chemical symbols to represent the chemical elements.. • It is an international system used throughout the world and in all languages.

  3. The symbol is the same!!! • Every language has its own way of saying and spelling the name of a chemical element. • The symbol of this element is the same every where and in all languages. • Example : The international symbol of hydrogen is H • German : wasserstoff H • English : hydrogen H • French : hydrogène H • Spanish : hidrogeno H

  4. Rules to determine the symbols • To discover the rules for determining the chemical symbols, you shoul work in teams of two the Science Inquiry Activity «Inferring Symbols for elements», page 193. • See pages 564 and 567 for appendix D.

  5. Task • Teams of two. • Prepare a poster including: • A title • The rules that you discovered • Examples for each rule • The symbols and the names of the first twenty elements of appendix C (pages 562 and 563) «Periodic Table of the Elements».

  6. Did you know? • The symbol of sodium is Na. From its latin name, natrium. • The symbol of potassium is K. from its latin name, kallium. • The symbol of iron is Fe. From its latin name, ferrum. • The symbol of copper is Cu. From its latin name, cuprum. • The symbol of mercury is Hg. From its latin name, hydrargyrum.

  7. Symbols of the first page • Elements of these symbols • C carbon • Ca calcium • Co cobalt • Cu Copper • Ce cerium • Cr chromium • Cd cadmium • Cs cesium • Cm curium • Cl chlorine

  8. Homework • Page 224 • # 1 • # 6 • # 7

  9. Answers • # 1 : (e) and (d) • Nitrogen, N – Potassium, K – Sodium Na – Fluorine, F – Neon, Ne – Carbon, C • # 6 : • C (capital) • Ca (only the first letter should be capital) • Cu • Co (2 letters only)

  10. Answers (cont’d) • # 7 • (a): N = Nitrogen, H = Hydrogen • (b): Ca = Calcium, C = carbon, O = Oxygen • (c): Ca = Calcium, P = Phosphorous • (d): Na = Sodium, S = Sulfur, O = Oxygen
