  2. How does Troy reveal his plan? • He shares a bottle of tequila the other rafters gave him, and the group begins drinking. • Troy suggests that, after Grand Canyon, they all go to Mexico and live.

  3. Why does conflict erupt between Freddy and Troy? • Rita taunts Troy and he pushes her down. • Freddy steps in to stop Troy. • Pug defends Troy with a knife; Freddy knocks it away. • Troy and Pug leave and apparently get the scorpion from Adam’s gear and put it in Freddy’s sleeping bag. Freddy is stung.

  4. What happens after the scorpion sting? • Freddy, terribly ill, “retreats into himself” to find inner strength to defeat the poison. • Under Jessie’s guidance, they slip the boats into the river, leaving Troy and Pug behind.
