  3. How Did Mercury Get it’s Name? In Roman Mythology, Mercury is the god of Commerce and messages/communication.

  4. Discovery The ancients discovered Mercury. The date is unknown The earliest recording of mercury was by a Babylonian astrologer and possibly written by an Assyrian astronomer

  5. Mercury Measurements • Mass(scientific method)-  3.3010 x 1023kg • Volume(scientific method)-  6.08272 x 1010km3 • Density-  6.08272 x 1010km3

  6. Measurements continued… • Gravity-  6.08272 x 1010 km3 Mercury would not float in water because Mercury’s density is greaterthan water’s.

  7. Mercury’s Atmosphere Mercury’s atmosphere is very thin. The atmosphere is constantly being replenished.

  8. Distances • Mercury is the first planet from the sun • Mercury is 57.9km away from the Sun • Mercury is about 77 million km away from the Earth

  9. Orbit and Rotation • One year for Mercury is 87.97 earth days • One day for Mercury is 58.64 earth days or 1,407.5 hours

  10. Temperature • Averages around 430˚C and • Averages around -180˚C

  11. Composition • The internal composition is the core, the mantle, and the crust • Mercury is a terrestrial planet

  12. Appearance • The surface is similar to our moon • Craters • Mountain cliffs • Basins

  13. Rings and Moons • No rings • No moons

  14. Water • The only form of water is ice in the very bottom of the craters.

  15. Weather • Mercury is not tilted so there are no seasons

  16. If a Human Traveled to Mercury… It is unlikely for life to survive on this planet because of its temperature conditions

  17. Something Special… • Only two space crafts have ever traveled to Mercury: • It took about 6 years to get to Mercury • Mariner 10 in 1974-5 • Messenger- flew past Mercury 3 times before going into orbit around Mercury in 2011 Mariner 10 Messenger
