What is Chlamydia? (“kla-MID-ee-uh”) • It is a curable infection • It may infect the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, eye, or throat • Most common infection in the US • The pathogen is a bacteria called Chlamydia Trachomatis
How is it transmitted? • Being sexually active • Oral sex • Low defense • Contact with infected area
Diagnoses • Chlamydia is often mixed with gonorrhea • Doctors usually do laboratory testing such as • Collect fluid from vagina or penis • Urinal sample
Treatment • Antibiotics • Azithromycin (1 day) • Doxycyaine (7 days) • Erythromycin • Ofloxacin • Amoxicillin
Complications if not treated • Infertility • Chronic pain • Increases person’s vulnerability to getting HIV. • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) • Fatal ectopic pregnancy.
Prevention • Abstinence • Latex male condoms • Annual screenings • Sexually active women (25 and younger) • Older women with risk factors (new sex partner) • All pregnant women
Statistics • Most widespread STD in the USA. • In 1997 there were 537,904 reported diagnoses • By 2007 the annual total had more than doubled to 1,108,374
