  2. The Phloem and Xylem • The phloem and xylem are both vascular tissues found in a plant. • The phloem and xylem both transport nutrients around the plant. • The phloem and xylem are both transport tissues.

  3. Phloem • The phloem is tissue found in plants that carries nutrients (mostly sucrose / sugars) to all parts of the plant where needed. • The phloem mainly gives materials (sugars made during photosynthesis) to every cell in the plant for energy. • The phloem is always alive.

Xylem • The xylem transports water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant. • The xylem replaces water that is lost during transpiration and photosynthesis. • Movement of water and nutrients through the xylem is caused by either transpirational pull or root pressure. • Transpirational pull: tension in the xylem that pulls the water from the roots and soil. • Root pressure: movement of water from the soil to the roots (osmosis) that forces the water / nutrients up the xylem towards the leaves (from a positive pressure).

  6. Structure of the xylem • Most obvious xylem cells are the long tracheary elements that transport water.

  7. Similarities and differences Using what you now know about the vascular tissues found in plants (phloem and xylem), identify as many similarities and differences that you can between the two.
