  1. The implementation of interviewer remarks Data-cleaning workshop Berlin, June 2009 Julie Korbmacher

  2. interviewer remarks • general rules • corrections • proxy information • remarks hinting to general problems • remarks and occupation

  3. general rules • Please note the general rules for country specific do-files! • separate do-files for every module • `var’_orig • `var’_flag • replace `var‘=1 if pidcom==„XX-123456-01“ • replace `var‘_flag=1 if pidcom==„XX-123456-01“

  4. general rules • we will send you an excel-file with your remarks • SHARELIFE • possibly also wave 1 and wave 2 • additional columns (see remarks_example.xls) • a short “filter” tutorial

  5. the first and most important step • look for remarks concerning variables which are important for the identification of the respondents • ID (name) • gender • year of birth • household composition • send us these remarks (translated) and what has to be corrected separate from the other corrections

  6. corrections of values • corrections only if it is evident that the value is wrong! • “given weights in kilo” -> mostly in Ireland • “We never lived together. Man died 6 weeks after marriage” IWER: Code 9997 if never lived together! • if there is relevant information but you can’t correct the variable • flag this variable (and label the flag!) • e.g. CS010a RELATIVE POSITION TO OTHERS LANGUAGE WHEN TEN • Germany: many remarks e.g.: German is not mother-tongue / German wasn’t a school subject –> flag (also with different categories if possible) • CS010a_”extra”_flag

  7. proxy information in remarks wave 1 and wave 2: • non proxy-modules • CF • MH • AC • EX CF019_ INSTRUCTION FOR CF IWER:THIS IS THE COGNITIVE TEST SECTION: WHILE YOU COMPLETE THIS SECTION, MAKE SURE THAT NO THIRD PERSONS ARE PRESENT. START OF A NON-PROXY SECTION. NO PROXY ALLOWED. IF THE RESPONDENT IS NOT CAPABLE OF ANSWERING ANY OF THESE QUESTION ON HER/HIS OWN,PRESS CTRL-K AT EACH QUESTION AND MAKE A REMARK USING CTRL-M AT THE END OF THE SECTION.

  8. proxy information in remarks • distinguish between proxy & non-proxy modules • proxy modules: recode the variable X_INTERVIEWER CHECK at the end of every proxy module if necessary WHO ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION? 1. Respondent only 2. Respondent and proxy 3. Proxy only change it in 2 (respondent and proxy) if it is 1 (Respondent only) • non-proxy modules: generate a “module_proxy_flag” for every non-proxy module

  9. remarks hinting to other problems • questions with above-average number of remarks • check translation!  country specific deviations • routing problems? • other problems? • hints to other problems • GS and PF “no equipment”  survey agency • It is very important to know about these problems to avoid them in the following waves.

  10. remarks and occupation • SHARELIFE: • both: open and closed questions (RE012, RE013 (respondent); CS009 (main breadwinner)) • do not change occupation status! • occupation will be recoded by (ISCO) experts! • use the column ISCO to identify all remarks which are related to job descriptions
