  3. Mission Daily Life • There were many kinds of jobs to do • Some of the jobs were • butcher was to kill animals for the meat • Cowboys took care of livestock • Hide cleaners clean the hides for the tanner • Saddle makers made saddles so they can ride to go and get food

  4. History • In 1818, the Mission Church suffered severe damage in an earthquake • Construction of a new permanent mission compound at the fifth and final site began in 1822

  5. Changes Over Time • This mission was rebuilt 5 times during it’s long history. • The final work on the fifth Mission Church started on Oct. 24, 1926, when bad wiring set off a fire in the church’s north bell tower.

  6. Interesting Mission Facts • Mission Santa Clara performed more baptisms than any other mission • The bells of Santa Clara have been rung each evening since 1798 because King Carlos IV of Spain asked them to.
