  3. Delivering Usable Content • Anyone who puts content on a site is performing the function of Web editor. • The decisions you make—or don’t make—when you put content on a site affect its usability. • Print writing and editing differ from Web writing and editing.

  4. Audience Analysis • Audience analysis is extremely important. • Balance the needs of the organization with the needs of the user. • Avoid self-promotion. • Avoid the desire to teach your audience how they should think.

  5. Methods of Audience Analysis • Analysis by classification: Making inferences from demographic data. • Example: Audience profiles. • Pros: Cheap & easy. Makes us think about needs of different groups. • Cons: Can lead to stereotyping and faulty inferences.

  6. Methods of Audience Analysis • Analysis from user feedback: Gathering feedback from users prior to development. • Example: Surveys, focus groups. • Redesign: Web statistics, search logs. • Pros: Gives more accurate view of audience. • Cons: $$, time.

  7. Methods of Audience Analysis • Ideal method: • Combination of classification and user feedback up front. • Conduct user testing of prototype. • Pros: Comprehensive approach. • Cons: $$, time.

  8. Onscreen Reading • Onscreen reading is slower than print reading. • Web users scan information, while print readers read linearly. • Web users are often in a hurry, have shorter attention span, and have a particular question in mind.

  9. Concise Writing for the Screen • Reduce wordiness. • “Get rid of half the words on each page, then get rid of half of what’s left” (Krug, Don’t Make Me Think). • Don’t delete information, delete words.

Concise Writing for the Screen • Tips for making your writing concise: • Make sentences active. • X“Selected programs will be offered by ORISE…” • ► “ORISE will offer selected programs…” • Reduce nominalizations. • X “The committee made a decision to…” • ► “The committee decided to…” • Combine sentences. • X “The committee made a decision regarding program offerings. Selected programs will be offered by ORISE beginning in 2003. • ► “The committee decided to offer selected programs in 2003.”

Concise Writing for the Screen • Reduce marketing language (“fluff”), jargon, and in-house language. • Example: Converting a brochure from print to online. • “Successful labeling systems mirror the thinking and language of a site’s users, not its owners” (Rosenfeld, Information Architecture for the WWW) • Examples: Link titles, page titles, navigation, levels of headings. • Use hyperlinks for more in-depth information.

  20. When a Page Must Be Long… • Users don’t like to scroll, but they will if encouraged. • Judgment call: Long page vs. dividing page into pages.

  21. When a Page Must Be Long… • Long, scrolling page • Provide content clues up front. • Informative levels of headings, link titles with descriptions. • Provide a summary above the fold to let users decide whether to invest the time. • Example: CNN.com

  22. When a Page Must Be Long… • Dividing pages • Dividing a page is different from dividing a document into topics. • New York Times example. • Create a printer-friendly version. • Consider whether your users will be motivated to click through.

  23. When a Page Must Be Long… • Internal page links for long content. • Pros: • Useful if items are strongly related. • Acts as table of contents with content. • Helps to chunk long content. • Cons: • Users may forget they are linking internally and get lost. • Tip: Don’t link too many words.

  24. When a Page Must Be Long… • Long documents • Break up documents into separate, logical, linked topics. • Provide a table of contents with short descriptions. • Provide a link to a PDF or printer-friendly version of entire document.

  25. Web Style Guides • Solidify your guidelines for Web content in a style guide. • Style guides promote consistency and quality control. • Distribute the guide to all staff who create information for the Web, design Web sites, or post content.

In Summary • Analyze your audience. • Keep text concise, straightforward, and easy to read. • Use the language of the user. • Make your content scannable. • Give readers content clues, let them decide whether to invest time, and give them options to print long pages. • Create and distribute a style guide.

  31. Væksten Nettet vil vokse med en faktor 20 fra 1999 til 2005. Det vil sige fra 10 mio. sites til 200 mio. sites

  32. Stagnation Når antallet af brugere når 1 mia. omkring 2010 vil udviklingen stagnere grundet den ringe infrastruktur i mange lande.

  33. Kort- og Langtidseffekterne Generelt overvurderes korttidseffekterne mens langtidseffekterne undervurderes.

  34. Krav til nettet Når nettet når de ekstreme størrelser der tales om (1 mia. brugere) vil kravet til nettets selvdiagnosticering øges kraftigt, da uøvede netbrugere ikke selv er i stand til at finde eventuelle fejl.

  35. Mulige langtidseffekter • Ejendomsmarkedet vil gå fallit i ”overpris områder” som f.eks. Manhatten da folk nu kan bo længere væk (= billigere) og arbejde hjemmefra. • Store koncerner bliver ”skaller” da al arbejdskraften spredes ud i løst koblede netværk af arbejdsgrupper. • Al ledelsesstruktur vil gå fra at være hierakisk til at være en netværkssammenkoblet intern markedsplads for idéer, ekspertise og projekter. • Fænomener som avancement og fuldtidsansættelse vil blive afløst af dygtiggørelse og kendskabsforøgelse (”Reputation building”)

  36. Post branchen nedlægges da e-mail helt vil overtage. Udbringning af pakker vil blive håndteret af små og mere fleksible firmaer. • Statens skatteindtægter halveres da de fleste penge tjenes på nettet og derfor er svære at spore. • Tonga bliver verdens rigeste land ved at hoste store og succesrige sites. • Nye investeringsmuligheder dukker op. • De fleste sælgere afløses af kunder som anbefaler et produkt til andre kunder mod at de får en bonus. Folk som taler negativt om et produkt vil der ikke blive lyttet til (hmmm… hvem sagde naiv?) • Bill Gates bliver igen verdens rigeste mand ved hjælp af sine online forretninger.

  37. Markedet vil blive oversvømmet af transportable enheder med trådløse modemer og folk vil derfor være online hele tiden. Privatliv bliver en luksus (George Orwell – ”1984”) • Computer firmaerne vil stoppe med at efterligne Mac’en og dermed realisere Anti-Mac designet Overvejelserne bag dette design er forældede da de er baseret på meget små maskiner i forhold til hvad vi har i dag. Et ”Anti-Mac Design” går i store træk ud på at interaktion skal i front. Der skal bl.a. være adgang til ting selvom man ikke kan se dem. Meget mere skal automatiseres Alle eksemplerne er lidt overdramatiserede for at udtrykke at vi i virkeligheden ikke har nogen chancer for at forudsige resultaterne.

  38. Bærbare enheder Transportable enheder vil blive den tredje ”killer app” efter e-mail og web browsing. Web designere skal derfor være forberedt på mange forskellige monitor størrelser og opløsninger.

  39. WebTv WebTv’et er endnu ingen succes grundet at det ikke er behageligt at se film på en ”lille” monitor mens det på den anden side heller ikke er behageligt at benytte et Tv som monitor. Design regler for udviklere af websites beregnet til at blive set på et Tv: s.356

  40. WebBrowsere Browseren skal ikke længere være en selvstændig applikation af 2 grunde: Der er ingen grund til at behandle data fra nettet anderledes end data fra en harddisk. I dag fungerer browseren både som den der præsenterer informationerne og som den der bruges til at navigere rundt med. Dette skal splittes ud på forskellige – og bedre – applikationer.

  41. Båndbredden De sidste 15 år er den gennemsnitlige brugers båndbredde øget med ca. 50% om året. Begrænsningen for udviklingshastigheden skyldes 3 faktorer: Det koster tele-selskaberne enorme summer at udskifte kabler og udstyr overalt. Brugerne vil ikke ofre ret meget på at få øget båndbredden. Det skyldes at effekten af stor båndbredde ikke ses hvis resten af nettet ikke er tilsvarende hurtigt. De nye brugere der hele tiden kommer til er sluger ikke så meget båndbredde. Derfor falder det gennemsnitlige krav faktisk efterhånden som flere nye kommer til.

  42. Metaforer Man må ikke sammenligne nettet med TV’et da det er to fundamentalt forskellige medier. Det er bedre at sammenligne nettet og telefonen. Nettet kunne forbedres ved at ”arve” visse af telefonens karakteristika men der er også klare punkter ved telefonen som skal undgås. Contact tokens vil snart blive benyttet i forbindelse med e-mails. Det er krypteret data som giver adgang til at kontakte en person. Det fungerer som en slags avanceret telefonnummer.

  43. Omstrukturering af Media-rummet Alle nuværende medier vil være erstattet af en Web-løsning om 5-10 år. Det er oplagt at samle alle medier i ét så snart teknologien giver mulighed for det.
