  2. Where did the people come from? • Serbia • Bosnia • Herzesouina,Croatia • Republic of Macedonia • Albania

Who were they ruled by? • 12th Century- Principality of Zeta • 1276-1309- Queen Jelena • 1496- Ottoman Empire • 14th Century- House of Balsic/Crnojevic • 18th and 19th Century- House of Petrovic • During the Ottoman rule over the Balkans, the Montenegrins were given their independence from the Ottoman Empire.

How did the rulers influence the region/ ethnic group? • The medieval principalities of Zeta and Doclea under local rulers have paved the path for what is modern Montenegro. • Under Ottoman rule a theocracy was formed. *Theocracy is a form of government in which a god is recognized as the ruler* • Under the Crnojevic rule, the Montenegrin Church reached it’s peak. • The rule of the House of Petrovic unified the Montenegrins and established strong ties with Russia and Serbia. • The Montenegrins maintained their independence from the Ottoman Empire.

What wars/conflicts were they involved in before the breakup of Yugoslavia? • Balkan War 1911-1912 • World War I –Allies • Christmas Rebellion 1922-1923 • The Christmas Rebellion refers to the uprising of Montenegrin guerrilla fighters aimed against the planned annexation by Serbia, and occupation by the Serbian armed forces.

  6. What religion do they practice? • Eastern Orthodox • Christianity • Pre-Christian Practices • Some Muslim and Catholic

  7. What is their economy based on? • Majority are farmers • They produce olives, figs, and grapes • They herd sheep, goats, and cattle

  8. 3 ways the physical geography of the region impacted the development of this ethnic group • Slavs traveled from the Bay of Kotor to the river of Bojana during the first half of the 7th century to form the Principality of Doclea • A tradition of newly weds is to plant an olive tree as a symbol of marriage. • After the Montenegrins had moved to Adriatic , Dr. Rotkovic came about to find 800 toponyms in Montenegro. * Toponymy is the scientific study of place names, their origins, and their meanings.*
