What is Supercomputing? • A computing system typically consisting of multiple processors working together with a lot of memory per processor, a lot of disk storage across the entire system that is capable of performing a large number of calculations in a short period of time on a large amount of data to achieve a single task. • Typical classes of problems include: • Problems of Scale • Simulation and Modeling • Difficult or “Hard” Problems – Non-Deterministic (NP) • Adaptive Systems; Artificial and Natural
