  2. About Archibald Macleish • Born on May 7th, 1892 • Died on April 20th, 1982 • His mother was Martha Hillard. She was a college professor and president of Rockford college • His father was Andrew Macleish and he was a dry foods merchant

  3. Attended Hotchkiss school beofre moving on to Yale • Excelled in water polo and football • He was elected Phi Beta Kappa of his graduating class • Graduated from Yale in 1915

  4. Married Ada Hitchcock in 1916 • He served briefly in the army • Published his first book, Tower of Ivory in 1917 • He and his family move to Paris France in 1923 so that he could better devote himself to his poetry

  5. Taught himself Italian so as to study from the fourteenth century poet Dante Alighieri • Spent five years in France then moved back to the states and was able to live off of his writing • He bought a small farm in Massachusetts were he and Ada lived until his death in 1982

  6. Published more than 50 books of poetry, drama, and essays • Accepted positions from - The Library of Congress - Assistant Secretary of State - Part of the US Delegation to the United Nations (UNESCO)
