ZebraNet is a revolutionary sensor network designed for wildlife research, enabling scientists to track animal behaviors without disturbance. Comprising multiple data-collecting nodes that communicate with a base station, ZebraNet monitors vital signs, migration patterns, and interaction within species. This energy-efficient, lightweight system operates independently with GPS capabilities, storing detailed data on animal movements, heart rates, and feeding frequencies. With planned autonomous operation for a year, ZebraNet provides unprecedented insight into wildlife, fostering ecological research while minimizing human impact.

Wireless Sensor Networks The ZebraNet Wildlife Tracker
ZebraNet A sensor network consists of several data collecting nodes which communicate with a base station that compiles the data from them
Motivation Computer systems Perspective: Develop, evaluate, implement, and test systems that integrate computing, wireless communication, and non-volatile storage along with global positioning systems (GPS) and other sensors Biology Perspective: perform novel studies of Animals migration patterns Eating habits Inter- and intra-species interactions The impact of human action on their activity
Basic Operation Sensor Nodes periodically collects data and store Information about: Animal's location Heart rate Body temperature Feeding frequency. This information will be transmitted back to the base station when the researchers fly or drive by within a certain distance from the nodes. Hence, scientists can enjoy their observation efforts without disturbing the animals.
ZebraNet Design • Lightweight • Energy-efficient • Detailed 24/7 archival position logs • GPS-enabled • No fixed base station (no cellular service) • Peer-to-peer routing and data storage • Restricted human access to systems ➨ Planned 1 year of autonomous operation
