  1. Beowulf Preview Information • King Hrothgar’s kingdom/banquent hall is called Herot. It’s in Denmark. • Every night, a monster named Grendel attacks Herot and slaughters people. • Grendel has superior strength. None of Hrothgar’s men can help. • Grendel is a descendant from Cain, the man who killed his brother, Abel, in the • Bible. Because of this crime (major disloyalty), the descendants of Cain are all • monsters. • Grendel is angry because he cannot be accepted by the people of Herot or by • God, due to the sins of Cain. That’s why he kills day after day for 12 long • years. • Beowulf, a Geat in Sweden, hears of King Hrothgar’s troubles. He comes to • save the day. It is said in other sections of Beowulf that he has the strength of • 30 men.
