  2. What is the Chipman Cultural Center? • All wooden structure located in Salisbury, MD; Wicomico County • Built in 1838 • 1st public school house for slaved children in Maryland • Oldest African American church structure on the Eastern Shore

  3. As Wicomico County began to grow…. • Wicomico County is located at the head of the Wicomico river • Many changes occurred around the Chipman Center such as; ~Railroads were constructed ~Construction of Rt. 50 and 13 ~Factories such as Perdue were built ~Airport was constructed These changes destroyed many homes and the African American community that was centered around the Chipman Center.

  4. All of the changes that the Chipman Center experienced also led to it’s reconstruction to keep up with the time period and structures that grew around it.

  5. Chipman Center Changes: • A second floor was added • Air conditioning and heating • Lighting • Windows (stained glass) • Paint • Replacement of some wooden structures

  6. What is the Chipman Cultural Center now? • The Chipman Center is now used for church, meetings, and a historical landmark.
