  1. Your first interview: Report Journalism – Ms. Guerin

  2. Sample Questions • What is the best thing that happened to you this summer? • What was your biggest disappointment this summer? • What are you looking forward to most this school year? • Tips: • Keep questions open-ended. • Take careful notes! • Ask follow-up questions; it’s ok (even good) to go “off-script.”

  3. Your assignment for next class • Write a one-paragraph news story about ONE thing your interviewee talked about. • Good example: • Ellen Guerin, a recent addition to the SAS faculty, visited the Pudong IKEA last week. What she saw shocked her. “Homeless families had moved into the display living rooms,” she recounted. Guerin saw families apparently actually living in the displays. Children played in cribs, teenagers watched TV in living rooms, and adults even snuggled under bed coversin bedroom displays. Guerin plans to avoid IKEA in the future.

  4. Bad example • Ellen Guerin has just moved to Shanghai. She is a new teacher at SAS. She likes to read and has two dogs. Her favorite flavor of ice cream is pistachio. Yesterday, she went to Starbucks and ordered a Frappucino. She used to teach IB and AP History but now she is teaching English. She grew up in Philadelphia but now has a home in Minnesota. And she taught in New Delhi for 4 years. Guerin is excited about being in Shanghai.
