Course Description • This course provides students with a brief but in-depth look at how business firms use information technologies (IT) and information systems (IS) to achieve corporate objectives. • IS are major tools for accomplishing corporate objectives such as • To achieve operational excellence • To develop new products and services • To improve decision making • To attain competitive advantage • This course focus on the use of IT and IS to enhance the competitiveness of firm. • MIS is Not a technology course, But a business course.

  5. The major Objectives of the Course Understand the ways in which organizations use information technology for competitive advantage. Develop an understanding of the terminology associated with all aspects of information systems. Become familiar with key concepts related to hardware, software, telecommunications, database systems, and systems development. Study the various types of electronic commerce applications in use today and likely to emerge in the coming years. Examine current issues and long-term trends in information technology that will impact organizations in the future.

  6. Course Material • 1. The required textbook for the course is: • Essentials of Management Information Systems, 8th edition, Prentice Hall, 2007 • Kenneth C. Laudon and Jane P. Laudon, (ISBN: 0-13-501353-4 or 978-0-13-501353-3) • 2. Online Websites • http://wps.prenhall.com/bp_laudon_essmis_8/ • 3.   7. Grading and Requirements • Course grades will based on the following criteria: • 1. Two Exams (50%) : Mid-term Exam + Final Exam • In class exam • Multiple choice & True or false: 50% • Essays : 50% • Study guide • http://wps.prenhall.com/bp_laudon_essmis_8/ • 2. Team Projects (30%) • Video Case Presentation 15% • Current IT Issue Presentation 15% • 3. Class Participation (10%) • 4. Attendance (10%)

  8. Projects • Each team (2~3 students) should give the following two projects in English (Refer to the attached sheets for details) • 1. Project #1. • Video case presentation in English • 2, Projects #2 • IT issue presentation in English

  9. A Guideline for Video Case Presentation in English 1. Making up teams Each team consists of 3 students. The students with good English communication skills cannot belong in a same team. Each video case will be assigned to a team. Assigning video cases is based on lottery (running time: 2~5 minutes). 2. Preparing for presentation Watch assigned video case repeatedly until you can understand the story of the video case perfectly. Prepare power point slides for your presentation. You should prepare them in English. Send the completed power point file to Prof. Kim 2 days before your presentation by e-mail. All members of a team must participate in the presentation one by one. Assign a role to team members in advance on an equal time base. You should give your presentation in English. But, you may use Korean for discussion during the question and answer period. 3. Presentation Play the video case without interruption (1) Play and stop repeatedly to explain details of story by using the power point slides(2) Play the video case for the last time without interruption (3) 20~30 minutes video presentation and 10 minutes Q&A No more than 30 minutes for the whole presentation.

  10. A Guideline for IT Issue Presentation in English 1. Making up teams Each team consists of 3 students. The students with good English communication skills cannot belong in a same team. One of the following IT issues will be assigned to each team. Assigning IT issues is based on lottery. ① ERP (Enterprise resource planning) ② CRM(Customer relationship management ③SCM (Supply chain management ④ Business intelligence ⑤ Ubiquitous ⑥ Smart Phone ⑦ IT convergence ⑧ Second life ⑨Web 2.0 ⑩ Green IT  2. Preparing for presentation Collect information, figures and video which are related with your chosen IT issue in the internet or books. Prepare power point slides for your presentation. You should prepare them in English If you make a video clip that explains the concept of IT issue, you will receive some bonus points (optional). Send the completed power point file to Prof. Kim 2 days before your presentation by e-mail. Assign a role to team members in advance on an equal time base. 3. Presentation All members of a team must participate in the presentation one by one. You should give your presentation in English. But, you may use Korean for discussion during the question and answer period.  20 minutes presentation and 5 minutes Q&A No more than 30 minutes for the whole presentation.
