What is a hurricane? • A hurricane is a huge storm that gathers heat and energy over warm ocean waters. • It can be up to 600 miles across and can last as long as a week! • The winds of a hurricane can be anywhere from 75-200 mph! • The center of the hurricane is called the eye. It is the calmest part of the storm.

Where and When do Hurricanes Occur? • Hurricanes form 10-30 degrees latitude, north or south, from the equator. • Hurricanes form in the eastern part of the ocean and intensify as they move west. • The areas affected most by hurricanes are those areas of land close to the coast. • Each area of the Earth has a different hurricane season. In the North Atlantic, this season is from June to November.
