  1. The National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) and NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) Access to Data: A Partnership International Polar Orbiter Processing Package (IPOPP) John Overton NPOESS Integrated Program Office

  2. Evolution of Polar Direct Broadcast SSM/I, SSMIS, SSM/T, SSM/T-2 IMAPP, NASA DAAC, SeaDAS SeaDAS, NISGS, IPOPP, NPOESS FTS

  3. International Polar Orbiter Processing Package • The International Polar Orbiter Processing Package (IPOPP) is a software package that will be critical to the Direct Broadcast (DB) user community throughout it’s transition from EOS to NPOESS • IPOPP is the primary processing package that will enable the DB community to process, visualize, and evaluate NPP Sensor and Environmental Data Records - which is a necessity for the DB community during the transition from the Earth Observing System Era to the NPOESS Era. • NOTE: Terra (and perhaps Aqua) are subject to being decommissioned once NPP has completed CAL/VAL. Terra mission life was extended when NPP launch schedule moved to April 08.

  4. Why is IPOPP Needed? • The DB Community has high expectations for mission continuity from EOS to NPOESS • A transition from IMAPP to IPOPP provides DB community with user friendly processing packages for regional optimized applications • Enables global feedback loop for NPP CAL/VAL campaigns • Enable DB users to contribute their regional validated processing approaches/products to assist and improve global CAL/VAL efforts • Initiates role of research to operations provider for the IPO Direct Readout Mission • To facilitate the adoption/adaptation of DB regional optimized research/unique processing approaches to enhance NPOESS DB software functionality and capability

  5. The Partnership • NASA Direct Readout Lab – NPP In-situ Ground Station • Director: Patrick Coronado • System Engineer: Kelvin Brentzel • University of Wisconsin, Space Science Engineering Center, Cooperative Institute of Meteorological Satellite Studies – IMAPP • Principal Investigator: Allen Huang • Principal Investigator: Liam Gumley • NPOESS Integrated Program Office – Direct Readout Mission • Manager: John Overton • System Engineer: Joe Zajic • Meteorologist: Bill Munley

  6. IPOPPBuilding on the foundation of IMAPP and NISGS • IMAPP provided DB Community access to EOS data through an open source multi-platform processing environment with validated algorithms • NISGS will provide evolved technology applications for NPOESS instruments on NPP starting at the signal processing element (RT-STPS), all sensor Level 1A/B (SDRs) products, and Level 2 (EDR) processing for Active Fires and Vegetation Index • IPOPP will extend NISGS using development principles and goals of IMAPP to provide DB Community access to NPOESS sensor data on NPP through an open source multi-platform processing environment with validated algorithms NPOESS: Level 1A = RDR, Level 1B = SDR, Level 2 = EDR

  7. Additional Product Characteristics • True color atmospherically corrected images • Single VIIRS FOV cloud mask and phase • Cloud Infrared Properties • Land Surface Reflectance • Snow/Sea Ice Detection • Scene Classification (Clouds and Land Surface) • CrIS single FOV retrieval of temperature and moisture profiles • CrIS/VIIRS synergistic high spatial resolution cloud cleared radiances and retrievals • Efficient and accurate CrIS/VIIRS collocation

  8. IPOPP Development Goals • Facilitate the International Direct Broadcast Community Continuous Involvement in Algorithm development for NPP/NPOESS • By providing mission continuity from EOS to NPOESS; by participating in NPP Calibration/Validation • By Enabling Regional Application Development • Provide software to generate EDRs in near real-time from NPP Direct Broadcast High Rate Data of NPOESS instruments • Open source (GPL) • Freely available (no COTS licenses required) • Easy to install & run • Multi-platform (e.g., Linux, Solaris, OS X) • HDF5 data format • Self-contained, Modular • Uses consistent & up to date calibration Look Up Tables • Reuse and leverage legacy software (IMAPP) • Build on NISGS foundation

  10. NASA DRL Role in IPOPP Development • Update RT-STPS for NPP • Provide SDR’s (level 1b) software for VIIRS, CrIs, ATMS, and OMPS • Provide Active Fires and Vegetation Index Level 2 product software • Coordinate with NASA SeaDAS project for integration of Ocean products • Provide visualization and analysis tools • Provide web portal to DB Community

  11. NASA DRL Mobile NPP In-Situ Ground System Test-bed • Purpose: • To serve as the NPP/GSFC Direct Broadcast technology test-bed and to provide outreach demonstrations of these technologies to the user community and commercialization partners • To provide a mobile interface to the NPP S/C for Direct Broadcast compatibility and validation of the RF system, protocol processing, instrument data processing and the Ground Network interface • To serve as a tool in gathering real-time instrument data in remote areas (at sea or land) for Instrument Calibration and Validation Campaigns • To support real-time management and monitoring of natural or man-made emergencies via built-in spaceborne and airborne data processing tools

  12. Role of CIMSS for IPOPP • Develop a modular software processing package modeled after IMAPP • Focus on Atmosphere EDRs, Utilities, and CAL/VAL • Prototype and validate multi-platform compatibility • Deliver and Support Open Source package via website • Provide Training Workshops and Educate Students/Scientists • Maintain Website for access by DB Community
