  1. Problem Solving Strategies Notes 1 - Sections 1.5

  2. Essential Learnings • Students will understand and be able to draw conclusions based on number concepts, algebraic patterns, and relationships between expressions and numbers.

  3. Example 1 Given r = 55 miles per hour and a distance of 2145 miles, use the formula: Distance = Rate • Time (d = r • t) to solve for the missing variable.

  4. Example 2 Use the formula: P= 2l+ 2w to solve for lwhen P = 25 cm and w = 5 cm.

  5. Example 3 - Patterns Look for a pattern in the table. Then write an equation that represents the table.

  6. Example 4 Look for a pattern in the table. Then write an equation that represents the table.

  7. Class Problem Look for a pattern in the table. Then write an equation that represents the table.

  8. Example 5 You want to tape five posters on a wall so that the spaces between posters are the same. You also want the spaces to the left and the right of the group of posters to be three times the space between any two adjacent posters. The wall is 15 feet wide and the posters are 1.5 feet wide. Write and solve an equation to find out the position of the posters.

  9. Example 6 – cont. 5 posters each 1.5 feet wide Width of wall: 15 feet Space to left and right of posters is 3 times space between posters
