  3. Activity Ideas • When you were a Teenager … • Think about 1 adult in your life that made a difference and why. • Discuss in pairs & report out that one “thing” this adult did that made a difference in your life.

  4. A Local StorySan Diego, CA Once Upon a Time there was a School-to-Career Youth Council….. Original makeup of youth membership – N/A?? A case for youth involvement (good idea!!!) • Recommendation, Decision Role of the Workgroup – advise on youth development and youth involvement issues Youth Advisory Board • Recruitment • Role, responsibility & authority • Support Enthusiasm, Motivation, Flexibility, & Support

  5. The Process… Identify our purpose – Provide a youth voice to the Youth Council Youth will be involved on the policy level, responsibilities will be Oversight focused and not task oriented. The Council will provide background, support and mentoring by promising to stay flexible and open to changes as we learn about the how to involve youth in the decision-making process

  6. Why does the Youth Council want to involve young people?? It makes sense to have youth input on decision making that directly effects them Youth bring a new perspective; “out of the box” thinking To provide skill building and leadership development opportunities for young people To bridge the generation gap and build positive adult – youth relationships To increase the credibility of the youth council Fulfill and surpass legislative requirement of youth membership to have meaningful youth involvement

  7. Advisory Board Responsibilities Why are we here? • To provide input on policy and advocate for youth • To market youth programs and increase public awareness about youth workforce issues • Provide input on good and bad community programs What do we have to offer? • Be a workgroup that reports directly to the Youth Council • We can follow-thru on Youth Council recommendation? What do we believe in and value? • Free pizza at all YAB meetings!! • Believe our recommendations should be taken seriously!! • All youth serving agencies should “practice what they preach”

  8. BRIDGING THE GAP Create one activity with your youth council to accept a commitment to meaningful youth involvement. • “Out of the Box” experience must have an impact on the youth council. • Must change the accepted thinking about young people viewed as objects and recipients to young people viewed as resources and partners. • The objective is to create a youth/adult partnership with shared control and responsibilities. • Youth council should provide skill building and leadership opportunities for young people with strong mentoring ties.

  9. Action Plan • Next Steps • Develop a strategic plan for youth involvement • Identify council action team • Develop a Mentoring Plan for Youth Council • Plan a retreat for the Youth Council • Recruitment of youth for council • Establish Youth Advisory Board • Future Meeting Schedule – Social Outing
