  1. Comparing Functions How can you use tables, graphs, and equations to compare functions? 6.3

  2. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 1 Melanie and Patrick have different phone services. The relationship of the monthly cost, y dollars, to send or receive x text messages, is a linear function. The cost of Patrick’s texting is described by y = 0.03x + 5. The cost of Melanie’s texting is shown in the table.

  3. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 1 A Write an equation to represent Melanie’s monthly texting cost. y = 0.25x B Which service is cheaper when 50 texts are sent or received in one month? Patrick’s service would cost $6.50. Melanie’s would cost $12.50. Patrick’s is cheaper.

  4. 6.3 LESSON QUIZ 8.4.C, 8.5.B, 8.5.F, 8.5.I The table and graph show the relationships between the number of miles driven and amount of gas used for two different cars.

  5. The table and graph show the relationships between the number of miles driven and amount of gas used for two different cars. 1. Which car uses fewer gallons of gas when 200 miles are driven? Car B 2. Are the relationships proportional or nonproportional? proportional for both cars

  6. The table and graph show the relationships between the number of miles driven and amount of gas used for two different cars. 3. Write equations in slope-intercept form for Car A and Car B. Let x represent miles driven and y represent gallons of gas used. Car A: y = 0.04x; Car B: y = 0.02x

  7. The monthly cost, in y dollars, to download x movies is a linear function. The cost of Nate’s service is described by y = 4x + 6. The table shows the cost of Beth’s service. 4. Write an equation to represent the monthly cost of Beth’s service. y = 5x 5. Which service is cheaper for 8 movies in one month? Nate’s service ($38 vs. $40) is cheaper for 8 movies.

  8. How can you use tables, graphs, and equations to compare functions? Sample answer: You can compare functions by graphing each function and comparing the graphs, or by writing each function as an equation and comparing the equations.
