  1. A look into the world of Costume Jewelry Costume jewelry is not a new fad; indeed, it has been in fashion for almost three centuries now. During the 18th century, jewelers starting experimenting with pieces of inexpensive glass and in the 19th century, semi-precious materials were introduced in the market. This type of jewelry became very popular with the women at those times because even the ordinary people could own a few pieces of their choice.

  2. But what is costume jewelry? It is imitated jewelry that is manufactured to be an accessory to complement a specific fashionable garment or costume. This is against real jewelry in gold and platinum with precious stones that cost the earth and are often treated as an investment for the future.  The popularity of costume jewelry took off in the middle of the 20th century. The rising middle class wanted to flaunt jewelry that was within their means. Further, the Industrial Revolution around this time made manufacturing processes more precise, and it was possible to make exact replicas of expensive jewelry and family heirlooms. The average town and countrywomen could wear considerable amounts of costume jewelry without breaking their bank to buy them, unlike traditional jewelry.

  3. Hollywood movies also played a significant role in the rise of costume jewelry. In the 1940s and the 1950s, leading female stars wore and endorsed jewelry worn by them in the movies. A copy of an expensive necklace worn by Bette Davis in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, for example, could be had at Joseff of Hollywood. Similarly, stars like Vivien Leigh or Elizabeth Taylor appeared in advertisements for the pieces they wore which were available in fringe shops as costume jewelry.

  4. An example of costume jewelry worn by a legendary actress in an iconic movie of yesteryears that is still a rage today is the Audrey Hepburn costume jewelry collection from her famous movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. You can get the get the full range in costume jewelry accurately replicating the real jewelry that she wore in the movie, all at affordable prices. The famous five-strand pearl necklace, pearl tiara, pearl tassel earrings, premium crystal tiara, and oval stone beaded earrings can be had for under $25 each. Wear a set and feel like a queen.  • However, all costume and fashion jewelry are not always found at the back of the jewelry box. High-end fashion jewelry has achieved a “collectors” status in recent times, and those that have the maker’s mark on the reverse are quite sought after in the secondary market. There is also a good demand for exquisitely crafted but unsigned pieces of unusual and vintage designs.
