    1. THE OFFENCE OF THE CROSS Galatians 5:11 “And I brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offence of the cross has ceased.”

    2. “Offence” Defined ASV – “Stumblingblock.” “That which gives offence or causes revulsion; that which arouses opposition; an object of anger or disapproval.”

    3. 1 Corinthians 1:23 "but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,"

    4. Newsweek Dec. 17, 1990 “And The Children Shall Lead Them” “Young Americans Return To God” “Above all, however, the return to religion is fueled by the boomer’s experiences of becoming parents – and the realization that children need a place where they can learn solid values and make friends with peers who share them.”

    5. Newsweek Dec. 17, 1990 “And The Children Shall Lead Them” “The baby boomers are returning to church, but the type of church they are looking for is one that offers support not salvation, hope not holiness. They are seeking a church that is convenient, entertaining, one that does not point out any problems in their life, one that does not preach a list of do’s and don’ts. They do not want to feel guilty.”

    6. Newsweek Dec. 17, 1990 “And The Children Shall Lead Them” “They inspect congregations as if they were restaurants and leave if they find nothing to their taste…they don’t convert – they choose … Participation follows not out of duty or obligation…but if it fits their needs…They do not want ‘an authoritative church’ or guide…a group affirmation of self is at the top of the agenda, which is why some of the least demanding churches are now in greatest demand.”

    7. GOD IS THE AUTHORITY NOT MAN People may not want or seek an “authoritative guide,” but that does not cancel the fact that there is one. 2+2=4 “Each individual is the ultimate source of authority.” (William Schulz, President of the Unitarian Universalist Assoc.)

    8. Jeremiah 10:23 "O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps."

    9. Isaiah 55:8-9 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts."

    10. Matthew 4:4 "But He answered and said, it is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"

    11. John 12:48 “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him; the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day."

    12. Naaman (2 Kings 5:11) “But Naaman became furious, and went away and said, ‘Indeed, I said to myself, He will surely come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leprosy.’” (2 Kings 5:14) “…and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.”

    13. DON’T GET MAD AT THE PREACHER! Don’t get mad at the scales!

    14. GARDEN OF EDEN Satan’s lie: “If you eat of the forbidden fruit, you will be as God.” "Buy the truth, and do not sell it, also wisdom and instruction and understanding." (Prov. 23:23). "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

    15. TRUTH WILL BRING OPPOSITION (John 15:20) "Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also."

    16. REMEMBER NOAH “A preacher of righteousness” (2 Pe. 2:5) “Something good is going to happen to you.” His sermons condemned the world.

    17. REMEMBER JEREMIAH “I’m okay, you’re okay.” He cried out against the sins of Israel. He was placed in a dungeon (Jer. 38:6).

    18. REMEMBER JOHN “Smile, God loves you – go out and make it a great day.” (Matthew 3:7) "But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?“ (Matthew 3:10) "And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

    19. REMEMBER STEPHEN Acts 7. Stoned to death. “Feel good about yourself”?? HE CONVICTED THEM OF THEIR SIN!

    20. PREACHING THE TRUTH WILL DRIVE SOME AWAY WHY? Some love darkness rather than light (Jn. 3:19). Some love the glory of men more than the glory of God (Jn. 12:42-43). Some refuse to live with the offence of the cross.

    21. CHRISITIANITY IS NOT A RELIGION OF CONVENIENCE (Acts 24:24-25) "And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you."

    22. Matthew 6:33 (Matthew 6:33) "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

    23. A CONVENIENT RELIGION? (Luke 14:26) "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.“ (Luke 14:27) "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.“ (Luke 14:33) "So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple."

    24. BEING A CHRISTIAN COSTS (Isaiah 53:3) "He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” (John 1:11) "He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” (Matthew 8:20) "And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."

    25. BEING A CHRISTIAN COSTS

    26. BEING A CHRISTIAN COSTS (Psalms 34:19) "Many are the afflictions of the righteous... (2 Timothy 3:12) "Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (Acts 14:22) "We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”

    27. JESUS DOES NOT PROMISE A LIFE WITHOUT HARDSHIPS (1 Peter 4:12) "Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you…” (1 Peter 4:13) "but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy."

    28. THE OFFENCE OF THE CROSS MUST BE ENDURED IN THIS LIFE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE CROWN OF LIFE

    29. THE OFFENCE OF THE CROSS Galatians 5:11 “And I brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offence of the cross has ceased.”
