  1. Tombstone of Aurelia Aureliana Suraj Bhudia

  2. Inscription "To the shades of the departed Aurelia Aureliana, who lived for forty-one years. UlpiusApolinaris has placed [this stone] for his most-lovely wife."

  3. About Stone relief carving Sand/limestone (cheap local material) Probably sculpted in a local mason’s yard

  4. Interesting features Flanked by pine cones which symbolise ‘life’ and carrying poppies, which symbolise ‘sleep.’ Christian? (Sleeping, not dead?) Crude facial features and garments do not reach the floor. Unusual for a female tombstone, perhaps suggesting her husband bought a generic tombstone for his wife and added the inscription below? Cheaper than an entire tombstone being carved to specific detail from scratch General detail is poor e.g. Feet, however very basic understanding of drapery shown Hands are fairly well depicted however still no distinction between masculinity and femininity Facial features such as eyes etched in rather than carved Artist not highly skilled however a certain degree of technique required to produce such a carving
