  1. Volume Operations Module 8 HP Restricted

  2. Objectives • Explain Custom Volume Size (CVS) concepts and perform CVS operations (create and delete CVS volumes) using Command View (CV) XP graphical user interface (GUI). • Explain Logical Unit Size Expansion (LUSE) concepts and perform LUSE operations (create and delete LUSE volumes) using CV XP GUI. • Create OPEN-V volumes on the XP12000 using CV XP GUI HP Restricted

  3. XP12000 Volume Manager XP • Consists of the CVS and LUSE functions • CVS • An LDEV can be divided into smaller LDEVs • One or more LDEVs are converted into Free Space used to create one or more CVs • CVS appears on the CV screens as the Customized Volume tab • LUSE • Multiple LDEVs can be combined into a single larger LDEV • LUSE appears on the CV screens as the Volume Management tab HP Restricted

  4. Custom volumes • Variable-sized custom volumes • Minimum size is 36MB • Maximum size varies, up to the size of the OPEN emulation type defined for the Parity Group • Created from array Free Space • Created with CV Volume Size Configuration (VSC) functionality HP Restricted

  5. OPEN-E 00:00 00:01 00:02 Free Space available for CVS operations 00:03 00:04 Free Space XP12000 Free Space • For the XP12000, all Free Space is available for CVS use • Additional Free Space can be created from unused volumes HP Restricted

  6. 7. Volume to Space — Converts one or more LDEVs into Free Space. This function is destructive. Back up the data on the volumes to be converted. Install CV — Defines and installs one or move VSC volumes in existing Volume Initialize — Converts a CVS volume back to a normal volume. This function is destructive. Back up the data on all customized volumes. XP1024/128 CVS operations HP Restricted

HP Restricted

  17. (01:00) LUSE (01:00) (01:01) (01:03) (01:04) (01:05) LUSE functional description (2 of 2) • LUSE combinestwo or more LDEVs to function as one large LDEV • This diagram showsfive LDEVscombined intoone large LDEV HP Restricted

  18. LUSE rules • Supported open volume emulation types OPEN-3, OPEN-8, OPEN-9, OPEN-E, OPEN-L, or OPEN-V are supported. • The maximum number of LDEVs that can be used to create a LUSE is 36. • LDEVs must be at the same RAID level. Combining RAID 1 and RAID 5 volumes into the same LUSE volume is supported, but not recommended. • When you combine a LUSE volume with another LUSE volume, the range of LDEVs should not be overlapped. • The maximum capacity of a LUSE volume is 60 TB. HP Restricted

  19. LUSE rules • The access attribute must be set to read/write when creating or releasing a LUSE volume. • Combining internal and external volumes is not supported. • The IO suppression mode and cache mode settings of the LDEVs combined into a LUSE volume must be the same. • All the LDEVs combined into a LUSE volume must be of the same drive type (either the SATA drive or non-SATA drive). HP Restricted

  20. LUSE rules • If a path is defined from a Windows 2000 host, a Windows Server 2003 host, or an AIX 5.2 host to an LDEV, the LDEV can be used for LUSE operations that handle a path-defined LDEV. However, if a path is defined from a host running another operating system to an LDEV, the LDEV cannot be used for LUSE operations that handle a path-defined LDEV. • If a path is defined from a Windows 2000 host or a Windows Server 2003 host to an LDEV and you want to perform a LUSE operation that handles this path-defined LDEV, verify that the host mode of the Windows host is 2C (Windows Extension). If the host mode is not 2C, change the host mode to 2C before performing the LUSE operation. • If the host mode is 0C (Windows Extension) and an LU path is defined for a volume, you cannot execute LUSE operations on the volume without unmapping the volume first. HP Restricted

  21. Creating LUSE volume (1-3) 2. Select Modify mode 1. Select Volume Management tab HP Restricted

  22. Creating LUSE volume (2-3) 3. Select LDEV 4. Add free Ldevs to LUSE 5. Click Set HP Restricted

  23. Creating LUSE volume (3-3) Click “apply” HP Restricted

  24. Deleting (releasing) LUSE volumes (1 of 2) 2. Select LUSE Volume and right-click to select Release LUSE Volume option. 1. Select CU. 3. Click OK to confirm. HP Restricted

  25. 4. Click Apply to confirm. Deleting (releasing) LUSE volumes (2 of 2) HP Restricted

  26. Changing LUSE capacities • Increasing • Select the LUSE volume to be expanded, then add LDEVs or LUSE volumes. Select the LDEV or LUSE volumes to be added, then select a LUSE volume to be expanded • Each LDEV or LUSE volume being added must have the same capacity as each LDEV in a LUSE volume to be expanded • Reducing • You may not reduce the capacity of an existing LUSE volume. If you want a LUSE volume to have a smaller capacity, you must first release the LUSE volume and then redefine the LUSE volume. HP Restricted

  27. Online LUSE Extension on Windows • Prerequisites • XP1024/128 FW: 21.07.xx – support for XP12000 in ~3/05 • CommandView 1.7b or higher • Hostmode: 2C (Emulex/QLogic only, D8602B not possible) • All new LDEVs to be added to an existing LUN must have a bigger number than the already contained LDEVsExample: • LUSE exists with 0:29, 0:30, 0:31, 0:32 • It is allowed to add LDEVs with a higer number, i.e. 0:40, 0:41 and 0:42 • IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO ADD LDEVs with a lower number, i.e. Neither 0:10 nor 0:20 nor 0:28 are allowed HP Restricted

  28. Verify or set Hostmode to 2C HP Restricted

  35. From the CV screen, click an LDEV folder. • Select a VDEV. • Click Make Volume from the pop-up menu. • In the Make Volume window, indicate the capacity unit, select one of the four OPEN-V creation methods, specify the capacity or number of volumes, and click Set. 39. Creating initial custom volumes for OPEN-V (5 of 5) • Repeat assigning CU and LDEV numbers for all OPEN-V volumes • Click Next after setting all CU and LDEV numbers • Set a SSID for an OPEN-V volume by clicking its CU number, entering a new SSID in the Input SSID field, then clicking Set • After setting all SSIDs, click Next • Verify that all information is correct, then click OK. • Click Apply • Click OK HP Restricted
