  2. Quick Facts: • 17.5 million Americans have depression. Over 9 million have major or clinical depression. • Two-thirds of people with depression do not seek the necessary treatment. • 80% of people with clinical depression that receive treatment will significantly improve their lives. • Women experience depression about • twice as often as men do. • According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suicide was the ninth leading cause of death in the U.S. in 1996

  3. Symptoms of major depression 1. Feelings of : • Sadness • Emptiness • Worthlessness 2. Loss of Interest or pleasure in most activities 3. Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions 4. Decreased energy, feeling fatigued, or “slow” 5. Oversleeping, early morning awakening, insomnia 6. Thoughts of death or suicide, plans or attempts
