What does this tell us? • Monographs more expensive than thought • Staff time is the largest cost item • Smaller presses spend less (greater efficiency or underinvestment) • ‘No significant determinants of cost’ (eg rent) • No standard way of determining overheads • Questions around the methodology • Are these figures the same for non-American university presses?

  15. What Now? • North American presses will be discussing subsidies with their parent institutions • Presses will be looking for higher payments to go OA • There may be a serious look at whether this level of spend is worth it for each monograph

  16. Questions • How will we measure the impact of monographs? • Will going OA be a cheaper way of getting books into libraries • On what basis will publishers be evaluated? • What kinds of discussions will this report produce amongst OA funders?
