  4. Text-related information Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day was first associatedwitha priest named Valentine, who lived in Rome during the third century. Valentine was said to have performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. The Roman Emperor Claudius II supposedly forbade this in order to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. Valentine was eventually arrested, imprisoned, and put to death on February 14.

  5. Text-related information Valentine’s Day: During his imprisonment, he was said to have healed the daughter of his jailer, and they fell in love with each other. Before the eve of his execution, he wrote her a letter “from your Valentine” as a farewell, which was regarded as the first Valentine’s card.

  41. Difficult sentences He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. (L.4-5) 1) Paraphrase the sentence. He tried to find the girl who shared many of his views, interests and feelings but who he had never met before. The girl was supposed to wear a rose at their first meeting. 2) Translate the sentence into Chinese 他在寻找一位佩带玫瑰的姑娘,一位他只知其心, 不知其貌的姑娘。

  42. Difficult sentences Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. (L.15) 1) Paraphrase the sentence. Each letter from one would bring forth a warm response from the other as a seed falling on fertile soil is likely to grow into a plant. 2) Translate the sentence. 每一封信都如一颗种子散入肥沃的心灵之土。

  44. Difficult sentences Her golden hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears. (L.34-35) 1) Analyze the structure of the sentence. This sentence is formed with the link verb “lie”. Link verbs can be followed by adjectives, prepositional phrases, noun phrases, etc. 2) Paraphrase the sentence. She wore her golden hair in curls and pulled them back to reveal her well-formed ears. 3)Translate the sentence into Chinese. 一头卷曲的金发披在秀美的耳根后。

  45. Difficult sentences She was more than a little overweight, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. (L.45-46) 1) Paraphrase the sentence. She was quite a big woman. Her feet were thick in the ankles and could hardly squeeze into her low-heeled shoes. 2) What is the meaning of the phrase “more than a little” in this sentence? The phrase here means “very”. ---My younger brother was more than a little excited to have Michael Jordan sign his T-shirt. 3) Translate the sentence into Chinese. 她体态臃肿,粗圆脚踝上套一双低跟鞋。

  46. Difficult sentences 独立主格: (and her thick-ankled feet were thrust into low-heeled shoes) 句子中的独立成份与全句没有语法关系的句子成份叫做句子的独立成份。 一)独立主格结构的构成: 1) 名词(代词)+现在分词、过去分词; 2) 名词(代词)+形容词;her figure long and slim(L34) 3) 名词(代词)+副词; 4) 名词(代词)+不定式; 5) 名词(代词) +介词短语构成。

Difficult sentences 二)独立主格结构的特点: 1)独立主格结构的逻辑主语与句子的主语不同,它独立存在。 2)两个句子间,不能有连接词。 3)名词或代词与后面的分词,形容词,副词,不定式,介词等是主谓关系。 4)独立主格结构一般有逗号与主句分开。 1) The president assassinated, the whole country was in deep sorrow. 2) Weather permitting, we are going to visit you tomorrow. 3) This done, we went home. 4) The meeting gone over, everyone tired to go home earlier. Exercise: Structure 1 (P.150 )

Difficult sentences I felt as though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own. (L.47-50) 1) Why does the author say that he felt as though he was split into two? Because he was put into a difficult situation, one half of him wishing to go with the pretty young woman, the other wanting to stay with the woman who had warmed his heart.

  49. Difficult sentences 2) Translate the sentence into Chinese. 我觉得自己好像被劈成两半,一方面热切地想去追赶她,但另一方面我又渴望那以为以其心灵真诚陪伴我并成为我的精神支柱的女人。

( and 表示条件) (If you tell me whom you love, I will tell you who you are.) --- Think it over again, and you’ll find a way out. antonymy:or/ either or ( if not 否定的条件) --- Make up your mind, or you’ll miss the chance. ---You’ll either behave yourself, or you’ll never go out with me.
