  3. The Philippines is a country divided into a series of islands • The Philippines have a population of nearly 100 million people. It is 7th most populated country in Asia and the 12th most populated country in the world.

  4. There are many migrated Filipinos who work in Ireland. They work mostly as nurses and minders. They are very helpful in our country and now it is time for us to help them.

  5. Their main occupation is fishing and exporting. They provide us with tropical fruits such as mangos and coconuts • The Philippines have also provided us with great singers, actors and sportsmen like Manny Pacquiáo a world champion boxer and Vanessa Hudgens, a half Filipino.

  6. What is a typhoon ? A typhoon is a mature tropical cyclone.

  7. Typhoons are most commonly formed over the Pacific ocean. • Typhoons are rated in strength according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. • Typhoons are storms of low pressure with speeds of over 74mph.

  8. Typhoon Haiyan Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on November 7th 2013. Winds reached 305 km/h (3 times as fast as people drive on the motorway). One province was 80% under water. The typhoon ranks among the world's strongest tropical storms and appears to have been more powerful than Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Huge waves swept away entire coastal villages

Effects • 13% of the countries population was affected. • Over 10,000 died which is 40 times the amount of people in our school (all dead) and 12,487 injured. • Around 600,000 people have been evacuated • One province is 80% under water • In some places people are being buried in mass graves. • People have no choice but to steal as they don’t have enough food

How many people have been affected? • Estimated 10,000 people left dead after the typhoon. • Over 350,000 people have sought refuge in evacuation centres. • Half a million more are living out in the open. • Over 250,000 houses are severely damaged. • 107,500 people have received food assistance from U.N humanitarian so far.

  11. What Is Aid? • Aid is to give help or assistance to someone or an area • Aid provides; food, shelter and other health support to people who have been affected by a natural disaster.

  12. What has Ireland done? Aer Lingus has provided an A330 aircraft and staff to fly the cargo to Dubai, before onward transportation by GOAL staff to the Philippines.  • An Aer Lingus flight left with 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid bound for the Philippines. • The Irish aid agency GOAL is sending medical supplies, food and materials to provide shelter for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan as well as nine tonnes of water. 

  13. …And the rest of the world? Over £240bn has been money so far. donated by private and governmental organizations to the Philippines. It is said that IKEA (the Swedish furniture company) has given more financial aid to the Philippines than China! The world's second-largest economy Japan, has pledged $10m and offered to send troops, ships and planes. Australia is giving $28m • The US has provided $20m for typhoon Haiyan relief efforts along with military rescue operation.

  14. Celebrities such as Beyonce, Adele, One Direction, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Lorde and Kings of Leon have all donated tracks to an album that will raise money for the Philippines Red Cross. The album consists of 39 tracks and is out now for €11.99
