  6. [handout p10] Beyond the lunch club Community Provision Community Development Community Action • Legitimate, useful and effective • Sometimes used as a blend • Jesus used all three. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  7. [handout p10] Community Provision Beyond the lunch club Providing services to people who use what we offer. They are not involved in shaping or delivering the service. • Good for immediate need, crises, making contacts. • Identifies you as the giver. • You keep the power and control. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  8. [handout p10] Community Provision Beyond the lunch club Focuses on the effects of the problem and not its roots Can create dependency Leaves the cause of the problem unaffected. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  9. [handout p10] Community Action Beyond the lunch club Collaborating with local people and organisation to plan and deliver services. Campaigning to get things put right • Good for getting local people together. • Tackles the issues that affect people. • Good for looking at the causes of problems • Brings in power from outside. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  10. [handout p10] Beyond the lunch club Community Action • Can be short term, focussing on one campaign about one issue. • Can lose connection with people’s actual everyday needs. • Can be hard to spot the Christians at work in this. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  11. [handout p10] Beyond the lunch club Community Development Enable local people to take responsibility and act in response to needs and issues. • Local people set the agenda, identify own resources and needs. • Local people take control of the process • Good for long term change • Power is handed over. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  12. [handout p10] Beyond the lunch club Community Development You will not be able to control the agenda. You can lose the overt Christian influence. You may have to deal with some people in your church or project who may be uncomfortable with these aspects. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  13. [handout p10] Beyond the lunch club Can you spot the three ways of working in the projects we learn about? Watch out for blends of different approaches All are legitimate. All have their strengths and weaknesses. We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church

  14. [handout p10] Case Study 3 Beyond the lunch club • Where have YOU come from? Roots, passions, story. • What changes do you want to bring? Short term, long term. • What resources do you need and what is your first step? Be flexible and creative • What key things have you learnt today that you can apply to your work? We create choices for disabled people and bring life to local communities www.livability.org.uk/church
