  1. CONTRACEPTION AGAIN WITH IUD AFTER IUD DISLOCATION AND IUD+PREGNANCY (EVALUATION OF 6412 CASES)Ertopçu K, Inal MM, Ozenc Z, Donmez A, Yıldırımkaya G, Ozelmas I, Tınar SMinistry of Health Aegean Obstetrics and Gynecology Teaching and Research HospitalIzmir – TURKEY

  2. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the comparison of the cases whose intrauterine devices were replaced after the expiry date with the cases whose IUDs were replaced with the new ones after the early extraction of IUDs because of IUD dislocation and IUD+pregnancy.

  3. METHODS • 6412 cases whose IUDs were removed in between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2004 in our Family Planning Department were classified into three groups according to the removal reasons; • Dislocation group with 1092cases, • IUD+pregnancy group with 231 cases and • IUD up to expiry date with 5089 cases.

  4. METHODS • IUDs of all cases who decided to continue their contraception with IUDs again were replaced with the new ones (1390 cases) and these cases were enrolled into the study. • CuT380 A IUDs as before were applied to all of these cases again. • Observed IUD dislocation andIUD+pregnancy rates of all new IUD applied cases throughout one year were compared, • Demographiccharacteristics of all three groups were compared

  5. METHODS • DISLOCATION+PREGNANCY ;USG DIAGNOSED • FOLLOW-UP NEW IUD;1YEAR • IUD;CUT 380A • EXPIRY DATE;10 YEARS

  6. RESULTS • IUDs were applied immediately to 235 cases (21.5%) outof 1092 cases admitted because of IUD dislocation. Throughout one year follow-up, IUD dislocation was observed in 16 cases again (6.8%) and IUD+pregnancy in 4 of the cases (1.7%). • IUDs were applied to 104 (45%) of 231 cases during MR (menstrual Regulation) admitted because of IUD+pregnancy. Throughout one year follow-up, IUD dislocation was observed in 5 cases again (4.8%), nocases with IUD+pregnancy was observed. • IUDs were applied to 1051 (20.6%) of 5089 cases again, admitted again because of the expiry date. Throughout one year follow-up, IUD dislocation was observed in only 3 of these cases (0.29%) and IUD+pregnancy in only one case (0.09%).

  7. IUD EXTRACTED; • 1.DISLOCATION GROUP 1092 CASES2.IUD+PREGNACY GROUP 231 CASES3.IUD UP TO EXPIRY DATE GROUP 5089 CASES REDISLOCATION NEW IUD APPLIED; 1.235 cases 1.16 (6.8%) 2.104 cases 2.5 (4.8%), 3.1051 cases 3.3 (0.29%) IUD+PREGNANCY AGAIN 1.4 (1.7%). 2. 0 3. 1 (0.09%).

  9. DEMOGRAPHIC PROPERTIES Previous abortions: dislocation&redislocation SD:1 chi-square =2.98 p=0.1

  10. RESULTS • Evaluation of the demographic characteristics revealed a statistically significant prominence innumber of previous abortionsin redislocation group and in IUD+pregnancy group. • It was also observed that the mean ageof IUD+pregnancy cases were higher than that of other groups which was in between 21-30 years. • It was also observed that the mean age of dislocation and redislocation groupswere higher than that of other groups which was in between31-40 years.

  11. CONCLUSION Increase in rates ofre-dislocation and IUD+pregnancy throughout one year in cases whose IUDs were exchanged due todislocationwas significant.
