  3. Brainstorming Points • Using a half sheet of paper, create a 1-3-3 web. • Include your main idea in the circle, your three reasons in your secondary circles, and then branch out for your three supporting details. • See Mrs. DeCent's graphic on the board...

  4. Writing a Thesis Statement • Your thesis statement should be 1 complete sentence. You may want to include your three key points within your thesis. • Example: • All of the characters had hope and experienced loss, such as the death of Lennie's dog, the demise of Curley's wife's glamorous lifestyle, and the loss of George's dreams.

Writing the Introduction • What should your introduction include? • Topic Sentence/Attention Grabber Sentences • Begin your introduction with something that will grab the reader's attention and make them want to read more. • 1-2 Sentences • Include a brief story summary • also known as a sweeping summary • 1-2 sentences • Transition Sentences • 1 sentence • Thesis Statement • 1 sentence

  6. Example Introduction "It's a lot better to hope than not to" (Benjamin J. Stein in The American Spectator). John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men is about two migrant farm workers who travel together in hopes of attaining their dream of owning land. These workers, along with other characters, realize that dreams are sometimes not attainable and that hope can sometimes turn to loss. The characters of Lennie, Curley's wife, and George all experienced loss of their hope as they struggled to cope with the realities of their situations.
