  2. Facts • He was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. • He is still alive today, at age 94. • He joined the African National Congress in 1944.

  3. A Step Forward • He helped form the first black government of South Africa. • He brought the plight of the black people from South Africa by being imprisoned for over 20 years by being against apartheid which divided black and White people in South Africa and kept them separate. • The black people where 2nd class citizens in their own country to that of the white people.

  4. His life • He was stuck in a prison cell for a 23 year period of time • He was released from prison in 1986 and went on to become president of South Africa. He had no anger towards the people that held him for such a long period of time. • He got divorced from his first wife Whinnie who stood by him throughout the years, she represented him in the outside when he was imprisoned and she was in later years accused of crimes and murder of other black South Africans.

His impact • During his years in prison, reputation grew steadily. • He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. • He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.

  7. Why Did I Choose Nelson Mandela? • He was one of the most influential men during his presidency in South Africa. • I have seen the movie Invictus and that movie really motivated me to learn more about him. • He is a very interesting person.
