Vision and Mission • Vision= To be the premier knowledge and learning hub of Archipelago island and the Asia Pacific Region • Mission = To support the University to be in the top 5 Universities of the Asia Pacific region in 5 years’ time
Rationale for building a Learning Commons • To meet the current and future needs of University academics and students, which is client-centric • To create a learning hub which facilitates different learning styles, resulting in producing high-achievers • To create a space for experiencing new technologies in education and research
Rationale for building a Learning Commons (con’d) • To create a focal point for social interaction • To promote creativity and innovation • To create a multi-purpose shared space, and foster inter-departmental collaboration between teachers, IT specialists, librarians, e-learning specialists in order to enhance university teaching, learning, research and knowledge exchange
Proposed design elements that will meet those needs • The Learning Commons will occupy the entire ground Floor of 5,000 square metres
Proposed design elements that will meet those needs (con’d) • It will ideally consist of: • Space for formal and informal study • Space for new technologies in education (e.g. multimedia facilities, video-conferencing, video-editing, playing of music, etc.) • Discussion spaces that are flexible and can be re-configured • Entertainment and Refreshment area
Proposed design elements that will meet those needs (con’d) • Space for community (e.g. exhibitions, public lectures, conferences, etc.) • Wifi connectivity • Green library (eco-friendly features) • 24/7 space
Call for design proposals • Conduct a user survey or a focus group discussion to collect their views on the Learning Commons • Consolidate all parties views and finalise the design elements • Submit to President and Selection Committee for approval
Call for design proposals (con’d) • After receiving approval, invite design proposals from faculty or students • Proposal with a detailed floor plan to be submitted within 3 months • 3 proposals will be short-listed and presented to the Committee for final decision
Budget Allocation • It is proposed that the Budget be allocated as such: • Building &Renovation costs = $3m • Furniture,facilitiesand equipments = $1.25m • Staff and training = $0.25m • Green features and landscaping =$0.25m • Marketing and publicity = $0.25m
How to measure success • User survey and feedback from students/academics – rated as their favorite spot • Ranked within top 5 University in Asia Pacific region in 5 years • Visitorshipto the Learning Commons increases by at least 50% within 2 years • Departments which collaborate with the Library receives increased funding, and provide sponsorships for library events
