2. 샌드위치 스펙 사례 • 칠리스(Chilli’s)는 최근의 한 신입직원 교육과정에서 신입직원들에게 피너츠 버터/젤리 샌드위치를 만들기 위한 스펙을 작성하도록 하였다. 그리고 한 직원에게 그들이 제출한 스펙중의 하나를 임의로 골라서 그 스펙의 지시에 따라 샌드위치를 만들도록 하였다. 재료는 주방에 있는 모든 자재들을 다 사용할 수 있도록 하였다. • 그 신입직원은 열심히 노력하였지만 결과는 완전히 엉망이었다. 사실 그는 시작도 제대로 할 수가 없었다. 왜냐하면 주어진 스펙에는 샌드위치에 사용되는 빵 (예를 들어, 호밀 재료인지, 소맥인지, 아니면 백소맥 브레드인지, 또는 햄버거용 빵인지) 조차도 어떤 것을 사용하여야 할 지에 대해 명시되어 있지 않았기 때문이다. 그 스펙을 만든 직원은 피너츠 버터/젤리 샌드위치 하면 모든 사람들이 으례 백소맥 브레드에 크림 타입의 피너츠 버터와 포도 젤리를 발라 만든다고 가정하였다. • 무지개표 백소맥, Skippy표 피너츠 버터, 그리고 Welch’s표 포도젤리를 사용한다고 구체적으로 스펙에 명시되어 있었다고 가정하더라도 이 스펙은 여전히 미진한 부분이 있다고 할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 이 스펙은 재료들이 어떻게 섞여지고, 어떤 도구를 사용해야 하는지를 기술하지 않고 있기 때문이다. 피너츠 버터는 얼마나 발라야 하는지, 젤리는 수픈으로 문지르면 되는지, 그리고 브레드는 몇 쪽을 사용해야 하는지 등이 명시되지 않은 것이다. • 칠리스의 관리자가 이번 교육사례를 통해 신입직원들에게 주지시키고자 한 사항은 다음과 같다. • 아무리 만들기 쉬워 보이는 음식이라도 주방에 제시하는 스펙을 요리사가 당연히 이해할 것이라고 가정해서는 안된다. • 구매담당자들이 사내고객에 의해 제시된 스펙을 당연히 이해할 것이라고 가정해서는 안된다. • 공급기업이 주문서에 첨부된 제품스펙을 당연히 이해할 것이라고 가정해서는 안된다.
