  2. Epic (OD) – An extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero

  3. Epic Hero (OD) – a main character in an epic whose legendary or heroic actions are central to his/her culture

  4. Epic Simile (OD) – An extended simile elaborated in great detail. Also called a Homeric simile

  5. Epithet (OD) – A term used to characterize a person or thing, such as “rosy-fingered” in “rosy-fingered dawn” or the “Great” in “Catherine the Great”

  6. Hero (OD) – In mythology and legend, a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods

  7. In media res (OD) – In the middle of something; specifically beginning a story in the middle of the action

  8. Metaphor (PT, OD) – a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but that have something in common without using “like” or “as”

  9. Motif (OD) – A recurrent thematic element in an artistic or literary work

  10. Odyssey (OD) – an extended adventurous voyage or trip, often intellectual or spiritual
