Bell Canada Chair in Multimedia • Multimedia Communications: broadband wireless communications, multi-user detection, interference modeling and rejection, multi-sensor networks, trans-coding and variable bandwidth communications. • Multimedia Security and access control: Digital image and video watermarking, Joint encryption and fingerprinting of multimedia content, Compressive data hiding, biometric identification. • Multimedia Signal Processing: Image and video compression, segmentation, interpolation, fusion and classification of multi-frame imagery, biometric signal processing.

Identity, Privacy and Security Initiative (IPSI) • Established in 2007, The Identity, Privacy and Security Initiative (IPSI) at the University of Toronto is dedicated to developing new interdisciplinary approaches to security that maintain the privacy, freedom and safety of the individual and the broader community • New graduate programs and courses • Public seminars and research workshops • Research and innovation

Major Research Projects (1) • Self Powered Sensor Networks, ORF, UofT, Siradel, Omesh, ADTelecom • The objective of this project is to develop a scalable, low power, wireless sensor network for detection of random events. Unlike current wireless systems the proposed network comprises novel sensor, data aggregation and energy harvesting technologies for ubiquitous and sustainable indoor/outdoor deployment in Ontario.

  5. Major commercialization efforts: OMESH Networks Inc. Opportunistic WIFI Mesh Infrastructure for Broadband Wireless Internet Access (OMESH) OMESH Networks supplies wireless radio and module products for cost-effective large-scale wireless networks. HeartID • Ground-breaking cardiac recognition system that can reliably recognize people from their ECG and PPG • The ECG and PPG can be captured from various points on the body, including the fingertips • Supports continuous recognition • Suitable to be embedded into a wide range of fixed and mobile devices

HeartID Example Use Cases • Authentication layer and data tagging on top of mobile welfare monitoring systems • Military training and field operations • Healthcare and clinical trials • Emergency responders, high risk individuals, etc. • User authentication on mobile devices, video gaming systems, and other consumer electronics • Access to user profiles and accounts • Access control • Authentication for smart cards • Multimodal fingerprint/cardiac recognition systems

Biometrics User-Centric Sensor Networks (BUSNet), • We explore cryptographic key generation and distribution methodologies in body area networks by exploiting time varying characteristics of multiple ECG signals. Our fuzzy key generation and distribution scheme provides a more flexible and computationally efficient alternative to existing solutions. • Body area Networks and medical applications
