It’s a DISC DRIVE! • Yes, it’s a disc drive: • Its a 5 MB hard disk in 1956....being loaded aboard an aircraft. In September 1956 IBM launched the 305 RAMAC, the first computer with a hard disk drive (HDD). The HDD weighed over a ton and stored 5MB of data. • IBM shipped the first unit of RAMAC on September 13, 1956. CmpE 101 Supplement

I recall ... I recall working (yet as a sophomore in EE) on IBM 1620 during 1966-67 at METU Center for Electronic Computing Sciences (literally it’s so called, in Turkish “Elektronik Hesap Bilimleri Merkezi”). There were two disk drives (each of a regular size washing machine) . Each drive had an exchangeable cartridge (disk pack) of 5 MB capacity (and, may be another fixed disk pack inside?).
