  2. Virus A computer "Virus" is just like a biological virus in that some type of contact is made, (using a floppy disk in a computer with a virus in the operating system or running a program with a virus attached to it). In other words…

  3. Virus A virus is a maliciously written program designed to have destructive effects

  4. Attachment • An attachment is a file that has been attached to an e-mail • This is the most common way viruses are spread!

  5. File Virus A file virus lives within a file and is activated every time the file is executed.

  6. Boot Sector Virus A virus that lives in the “boot up” code of a computer and then loads into memory every time the computer boots up. This way it can infect all programs and disks the computer uses.

  7. Macro Virus A macro virus is a virus that lives within a macro in some programs such as Microsoft Word. It copies itself into the normal template and then infects every file that uses that template. It is not very destructive, just annoying.

  8. Trojan Horse A "Trojan Horse" is disguised as a useful program, when in reality it is harmful. Behind the scenes it may be downloading information to a third party, deleting, changing or crashing information, etc. Greeks into Troy

  9. Logic Bomb A "Logic Bomb" is a program that sits on your computer and does nothing, until some specific event occurs. For example, the well-known Michelangelo Virus is actually a Logic Bomb – nothing happens until the date on the computer is March 6, Michael Angelo’s birthday. Then the program erases everything off of your hard drive.

  10. Worm A "Worm" is a program that travels independently along computer cables. Most computers are connected via cabling so these can do a lot of damage in a short time.

  15. Software • Another name for software is program • Application software allows you to do something you would be doing anyway • Ex: MS Word, Outlook Express • System software is used to control the hardware • Operating Systems

  16. Operating Systems • A group of programs that act as the connection between the user and the programs the user wants to utilize • Examples: Windows, Linux, Mac OS • What do we use in this class?

  17. Windows • Windows uses files and folders to keep track of data • File: A group of data that shares a name and extension • Folder: A place for a user to organize their data or files • We use My Computer to organize our data
