Thirty-five people sustained minor injuries and nine were critically injured. The emergency personal had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to cut some of the people free. Two Rovos Rail employees, including a pregnant woman, were killed in the accident.Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesperson, said the pregnant woman went into labour immediately after the accident, possibly from the force of the impact, but neither she nor her baby survived. The Railway Safety Regulator has learnt with alarm of the Rovos Rail accident in Pretoria. This accident has affected all commuter rail services on the Pretoria main line and the affected portion of the line has been closed until further notice. Our Railway Safety Inspectors are at the scene of the accident to immediately conduct an investigation on the root cause of the accident. Our preliminary investigations indicate that train, which was on its way to Capital Park (outside Pretoria) from Cape Town had stopped in Centurion for purposes of changing over the locomotivefrom the electrical one to a steam one. The rest of the train went into motion and ran away before the steam locomotive could be coupled resulting in a derailment outside the Blue Train depot in Pretoria. Our investigation will primarily focus on the procedures that were followed in the changeover of the locomotives, the condition of the brakes as well as other factors which may have contributed to the accident.
