  3. Now we cover the matzot and lift our wine glasses. We will be holding the glasses for the next several sections, culminating in the blessing of the wine, and the drinking of the second cup.

  4. At this stage we are going to say the paragraph beginning with the word “l’fichach,” which begins a series of praises of Hashem before the meal begins.

  5. This prayer speaks of five stages of deliverance for the Jewish people: • The slavery of Egypt to the freedom of Exodus. • The sorrow of the First Temple destruction to the joy of its rebuilding. • The mourning under the Persian Empire to the festivities of Purim. • The darkness of Greek rule to the light of Chanukah. • The current state of exile to the future redemption.

  6. This section is dedicated to thanking Hashem for miraculously saving us during the Exodus, viewing ourselves as if we ourselves actually shared the experience.

  7. These paragraphs are actually part of the Hallel prayer, which we finish after the meal. We surround our meal with praise of Hashem, both before and after, to make it clear that this is not an ordinary meal, rather it is a Divine service.

  8. Finally we conclude Maggid with a blessing, thanking Hashem not for the pleasure of the holiday, but for this unique opportunity to do Hashem’smitzvot. We then drink the second cup, leaning toward our left sides.

  9. Rachtzah רחצה

  10. We then wash our hands with the netilatyadayim blessing, and we’re careful not to speak until after we’ve eaten matzah.

  11. Motzi מוציא

  12. The Seder leader takes the three matzot (two whole, one broken) and says the Hamotzi blessing said on all bread.

  13. Matzah מצה

  14. Immediately after saying Hamotzi we recite the blessing for the mitzvah of eating matzah.Everyone then must recline and eat the appropriate amount of matzah in the next 2-4 minutes.

  15. How much matzah do we need to eat? The opinions vary greatly, ranging from a half to a whole matzah.

  16. Some ways to make it easier for guests to consume the correct amounts is to prepare bags in advance of the matzah and maror. Others write the correct measurement onto a piece of cardboard and measure against it.

  17. Maror מרור

  18. Everyone dips their maror into charoset, shakes the charoset off, and eats all their maror NOT reclining.

  19. Korech כורך

  20. The maror is again dipped in charoset, which is again shaken off. The maror is eaten together with matzah while reclining, after reciting the appropriate paragraph.

  21. We do this in memory of the opinion of Hillel that the Pesach offering, the matzah, and the maror must all be consumed together.

  22. ShulchanOrech שלחן עורך

  23. This is the festive holiday meal.The custom is no roast meat is served at this meal.The meal must end early enough that the Afikoman can be eaten before midnight. We should also not be so stuffed that we have no appetite for the Afikoman.

  24. There is a custom to begin the meal with a hard-boiled egg. Why? The egg is a traditional food of mourning, its roundness symbolizing the turning of the wheel of destiny. We mourn for the destroyed Temple, since without it we still lack the proper Pesach sacrifice.

  25. Tzafun צפון

  26. The Seder must conclude with eating matzah from the broken piece that had been put away. No dessert may be eaten afterwards. This is so the taste will remain in our mouths.

  28. Before we recite BirchatHamazon, the third cup is poured. It is a Torah mitzvah to thank Hashem after we eat a meal. Afterwards we say “boreip’rihagafen” and drink the third cup.

  29. Hallel הלל

  30. We pour the fourth cups, the door is opened, and we begin the second half of the Seder, devoted to our hopes and prayers for Messianic redemption. Some hold their wine glasses up the entire Hallel.

  31. The first two chapters of Hallel (recited before the meal) speak of the Exodus, the split sea, and receiving the Torah.

  32. These next chapters speak of: • Servitude to other nations. • The pains that precede redemption. • The war with Gog and Magog. • The Messianic Era. • Resurrection of the Dead. • The World to Come.

  33. Hallel should be said and sung joyfully and melodiously, as it is done in synagogues.

  34. נשמתWe say this lengthy prayer toward the conclusion of Hallel, which is basically an elaborate, extensive showering of praise unto Hashem.Ordinarily one is not permitted to attempt to praise Hashem fully, since this is impossible.The exception is one who has personally experienced a miracle, and this night we are to see ourselves as if we are leaving Egypt.

  35. At the end of Hallel we say “boreip’rihagafen” and drain the fourth cup of wine.

  36. Nirtzah נרצה

  37. Nirtza introduces the informal part of the Seder. We have completed all the mitzvot of the Seder, but we go on since it is a wonderful thing to continue speaking of the Exodus until later into the night.

  38. חסלNirtza begins with this prayer that in the merit of our studying about Pesach and our observing the Seder, we should see the Temple rebuilt and have the opportunity to properly observe Pesach in Yerushalayim.

  39. Afterwards we say out loud:לְשָׁנָה הַבָּאָה בִּירוּשָׁלָיִם.

  40. ובכן ויהיThis poem lists thirteen incredible things that took place on the night of Pesach throughout the course of Jewish history.

  41. אדיר הואThis song expresses our fervent craving for the rebuilding of the Holy Temple. Click to Play

  42. SefiratHaOmer

  43. SefiratHaOmer is the mitzvah to count the 49 days from the second day of Pesach until the holiday of Shavuot. In the time of the Temple, counting the Omer was a Biblical obligation. If you had not yet counted, this when we do so in the Seder.
