Join us at the ExCITe Center for a showcase of innovative projects integrating arts with STEM, such as knitted sensors for fetal monitoring, screen-printable supercapacitors, and multi-level position tracking for live performance. Attend classes on 21st-century fabrication, programming for creatives, and Max/MSP for music. Engage in hands-on challenges by building your own speaker using plates, bowls, and cups. Refine your design to enhance sound quality and range. Stay safe while working with magnets and wiring. Resources and instruction provided. Explore the intersection of creativity and technology at this cutting-edge event.

Your Materials Plates (styrofoam, paper), Bowls (styrofoam), and Cups (styrofoam) Masking Tape 2 Neodymium Magnets (½” diameter x ½” height) 1 Neodymium Magnet (½” diameter x ⅛” height) Magnet Wire (32 gauge) Index card Ruler Scissors AAA Battery Instruction Manual created by ExCITe Center MET-Lab
Your Goals Build a speaker that can play sound from an MP3 player when connected to an amplifier. Refine and redesign the speaker to improve volume, clarity, and range of sounds produced. Communicate your process and progress to judges.
Please Consider Safety When you touch the battery to the wire for testing, be aware that heat may be given off. The magnets are VERY powerful. Keep away from credit cards and electronic devices. Try not to get pinched when magnets snap together. Magnets may shatter if they snap together quickly.
