Cluster Life Science Krakow WHY POLAND FITS IN? • Polish economy is growing rapidly • Opportunities to capitalise on growing markets through the use of technology, research and lower operating costs • Poland has second highest consumption of drugs(in terms of volume) in Europe • in 2003 Polish pharmaceutical market was valued at €2.9bn with a predicted annual growth of 13% • EU accession means more open market and greater ease of operation; opportunity in Structural & Cohesion Funds 2007-2013: ~€68bn

Cluster Life Science Krakow REGIONAL POTENTIAL IN LIFE SCIENCE • Access to technologies and knowledgeon which new products are based • 32 universities and colleges in the Małopolska region and 37 specializedhospital clinics • Skilled and adaptable human resources(> 10,000 undergraduates, > 400 professors, > 1,000 PhD students in life science alone) • Established companies in life science sector and support of advanced physical infrastructure • Central European location and competitive labour market

Cluster Life Science KrakowBASIC FACTS • The idea to create cluster dedicated to “life science” based on recognition of the existing potential of both – life science industry and research & development • In April 2006 – regional conference on potential in life science in Malopolska region (conference held by Jagiellonian University) • In October 2006 Life Science Cluster in Krakow was established by 32 institutions • Jagiellonian Centre of Innovation has been designated to host the Cluster and manage it's activity

Cluster Life Science KrakowGOAL & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM GOAL Increase the level of innovation and competitivenessof the region through stimulating the cooperationof companies with a wide range of institutions in the field of science, research & development and technology transfer • Promotion of the Cluster in the region and internationally – setting direct relationship to global community (Biotechnology Fairs in Boston, May 2007) –Malopolska Region as the best investment location in life science sector • Development of common research and infrastructural projects for FP7 and Structural Funds • Development of the bio-tech innovation system PROGRAM
