  2. When you read, you may see ideas about groups of people, animals, or things.

  3. What you read & what you already know helps you to make a general statement about a group. This is called a: Generalization.

  4. Making generalizations Think about the group you are reading about. How are they alike OR mostly alike? OR What do they have in common?

  5. Why make generalizations? Generalizations are important because they help us to understand more about what we read.

  6. Let’s Practice…. Read the following passage. Think about the things that are being talked about. Ask yourself: How are they alike or mostly alike? OR What do they have in common?

  8. Painting has been a popular form of art for many hundreds of years. Some of the world’s oldest paintings were made thousands of years ago in caves in France. These paintings show animals like bears, panthers, horses, and rhinos. The paintings may have been used to tell a story. They might have been used to keep a record of the animals that the people hunted. Or maybe the people who made them thought the paintings would help to them hunt the animals. No one knows for sure why they made these paintings. But they are works of art!

  9. Which of the following is a good generalization based upon your reading? All paintings show animals. Paintings can be done for different reasons. France is home to many works of art.

  10. Sports are an important part of human history. Some of the earliest sporting events were the Olympics in ancient Greece. The first Olympics had only one event. It was the 20-meter race. Over the years, many other events were added. Some of the games at the ancient Olympics were dangerous. They could even be deadly. Bones were often broken and athletes sometimes died. Some of these games might seem cruel to us. But to the ancient Greeks, they were a normal and important part of life.

  11. Which can you say in general about the Olympic games? The Olympics have changed over the years. All Olympic games are violent. The Olympics have always been celebrated in the same way.

  12. Most people love to celebrate holidays. In America, we celebrate many different holidays. On some holidays businesses are closed. On other holidays they are not. All holidays celebrate important people or events in our history. Not all people celebrate the same holidays. Also, all people do not celebrate holidays in the same way. People try to celebrate the holiday in a way that makes it special and important to them.

  13. Which is true about most holidays? People celebrate the same holidays. Businesses are always closed on holidays. Holidays celebrate important people or events.

  14. When you think of river animals, fish probably come to mind. But did you know that fish aren’t the only animals that live in rivers? Rivers are interesting and diverse ecosystems that are home to many kinds of animals. Reptiles such as turtles, snakes, and alligators make their home in rivers. Amphibians such as frogs and toads live in rivers too. Many mammals such as beavers, hippos, and river dolphins make their homes in rivers. Rivers are full of life.

  15. What can you say about most rivers? All rivers are the same. Rivers are home to many different kinds of animals. All rivers are home to the same kinds of animals.
