  2. Discussion What do you need to write a friendly letter? Who might you want to write to? What would you write about? Do you know the person you are writing to?

  3. Parts of a Friendly Letter HEADING SALUTATION BODY CLOSING SIGNATURE

  4. The Heading The heading includes your address and the date. Write it in the upper right-hand corner.

  5. The Salutation The salutation or greeting usually begins with the word Dear and is followed by the name of the person who will receive the letter. Place a comma after the name. Write a salutation at the left hand margin, two lines below the heading. Dear Joanne,

  6. The Body The body of the letter contains your thoughts and ideas. Begin writing on the second line after the salutation. Keep the paragraphs short for easy reading.

  7. The Closing Write the closing two lines below the body of your letter. Capitalize only the first word and follow it with a comma. Sincerely,

  8. The Signature Put your signature under the closing.

  9. Prewriting Choose a person who will receive your letter. Gather ideas: describe yourself, describe something you like to do, information about State College, what makes PFMS special, provide a few questions for your friend to answer.

  10. Writing Begin by telling all about yourself. This is your introduction. The body should include 2-3 items that you brainstormed.

  11. Revising Try to make your letter easy to read and entertaining. Read the sentences over to be sure they make sense. Remember to start a new paragraph each time you switch to a new idea.

  12. Editing & Proofreading Check you letter for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Neatly type or write a final copy. A correctly written letter will make a good first impression!
