  1. Using an ATM is convenient. It makes it easy for you to withdraw cash. And many ATMs are operational 24/7, so anytime you need cash, you can head out to one and withdraw. However, there are risks that come from using the machine. Here are tips to help you stay safe while you use an ATM. Stay Alert Be aware of your surroundings. If you get the slightest sense that something isn’t quite right, don’t proceed. Look for another ATM instead. An ATM works like a convenient cash machine but it won’t do you any good if you don’t take precautions against safety problems. Time It Better Most of the robberies that happen around ATMs do so during the night. That’s why it’s best if you withdraw money during the day. That way, criminal elements won't have the cover of darkness. They won’t be able to hide their location and that should be enough to deter them from going through with any of their nefarious plans.

  2. Keep Your PIN Secret What is your PIN number? Cover the keypad when you enter the figures. That will keep prying eyes from getting your PIN number and finding access into your account. You could also insist on people standing a foot apart from you. If they’re close enough to see the numbers, politely ask them to take a step back. Pick a Good Location Don’t just use any sort of ATM you come across. Get a feel for the location. Is it secure? Is the place deserted? You’ll want to rethink your decision to withdraw anything from that machine if there’s no one else around, or if the location is hidden from the road or street. Don’t Ask for Help If something happens—maybe your money gets stuck or your card—don’t ask strangers for help. They might have rigged the machine to get you to leave your card or hand it to them. It might be a type of scam. Instead, go to the bank’s employees.
