  2. Promoted Religious Freedom • Included Catholics, Protestants, Quakers and Jews.

  3. Geography • Hudson and Delaware Rivers supported shipping and commerce. • River Valleys – fertile soil and mild winters • Conditions favorable for farming and raising cattle.

  4. Patroon • A person who brought 50 settlers to New Netherland (later New York). • Received a large land grant and special hunting, furring, and fishing priveleges.

  5. Proprietary Colony • Colony owned by an individual.

  6. Founding the Southern Colonies • Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia

  7. Geography • Soil and climate suitable for year round farming • Warm weather crops – rice, tobacco, indigo, cotton

  8. Demand for cheap labor • Use of the plantation system • plantation- large farm used to grow (plant) cash crops. • Pushed need for slave labor

  9. Royal Colony • Ruled by a governor appointed by the King of England. • Ex: Carolinas, Georgia
