  1. The Skeletal System

  2. 1. The _____________ system is made up of __________, _________, and the __________ tissue that holds bones together. • 2. There are _______ bones that make up the human skeletal system. Bones and ________ work together to help us move.

  3. 3. Bones are held together by stringy connective tissue called __________. • 4. _______ attach bones to muscles. ______________ is a connective tissue that cushions the ends of bones.

  4. 5. Bones are alive and continue to grow until the age of _____ years. • 6. The human skeleton has four basic functions: (Use Figure 1, The Skeleton, to fill in the blanks. • a. ______________: Your heart and lungs are protected by _____, your _______ ______ is protected by ____________ and your ________ is protected by the _______.

  5. B. _______________: Bones store_______ that help your ________ and _______ function properly. ______ bones store ______ that can be used for _________. • C. ______________: __________ muscles pull on bones to produce movement. Without ______, you would not be able to _______, _______, _________ or ________.

  6. D. ____________________________: Some of your bones are filled with a special material that makes _________ _______. • This material is called _________. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vya4wpS2fgk&feature=related

  8. Functions of the skeletal System - supports the body - protects the organs - allows the body to move - makes blood cells Parts of the skeletal system - bones - ligaments - tendons - cartilage

  9. There are 206 bones in the human body. Bones are living tissue that grow and need blood. Bones have blood vessels inside of them and are made of cells

  10. Types of Bone Tissue: 1. Compact: Layer of hard bone that covers all bone 2. Spongy: Surrounded by the compact bone, it has many holes & spaces in it. Makes bones lighter. 3. Bone marrow: Soft tissue inside of bones makes blood cells

  11. WHAT ARE JOINTS? A joint is where 2 or more bones meet & allow for movement • Ball & socket: Shoulder & hip • Hinge joint: Elbow • Pivot joint: Neck

  12. Joints are held together by a tough band of tissue called ligament Tough & flexible cartilage might cover the ends of a bone to allow for smooth movement between bones

  13. 1. A _________ is the place where ____ bones meet. • 2.Two types of joints - __________ and ___________. • 3._________ joints do not allow any movement of the bones; examples include _______ joints of the ______ and fused bones of the ________(hip) and coccyx(tailbone)

  14. ________________ joints allow movement and are named according to the type of movement allowed: • ____________ moves back and forth in one direction; found at the _______ and ________. • _______________joints permit a full range of movement; found at the ______ and ________. • __________joint allows a circular movement; found at the base of the _________. • ____________ joints allow many small bones to move slightly over one another; found in the _______ and ________.
