  12. Survey Divided into sections: • General Info • Income • Expenditures • Collection • Transactions • FSCS stats and other info

  13. Selected Questions Today • “Top Ten” Common questions • Often misinterpreted: • Over-reporting • Under-reporting AND • Opportunity to ask other questions • Some (ungraded!) “quizzes”

Library Income: Capital Revenue Includes revenue for major capital expenditures, such as: • Site acquisition • New or remodeled buildings • Furnishings and equipment for new or remodeled buildings Excludes: • Revenue for replacement and repair of existing furnishings and equipment • Funds unspent for capital projects last year • Contributions to endowments

  15. Income:Operating Income Income used for operating the library Exclude: • Income for major capital expenditures • Contributions to endowments unspent in FY06 • Gift funds or city income placed in T&A accounts

  16. Expenditures:Electronic Materials Accessed via computer, Internet, or portable reader Include expends for: • E-books and e-serials • Subscription databases (EBSCOhost, First Search, Heritage Quest) • Electronic files • Reference tools, maps, pictures in electronic or digital format

Collection:Serials vs. Periodicals Serials - publications issued in successive parts; maybe bound or unbound • NOT current year’s issues • Count volumes (as per publisher—usually one year of a magazine’s issues) “Periodical subscriptions” – number of current magazine subscriptions (purchased by library or donated)

  18. Transactions: Circulation Materials in all formats that are charged out for use outside the library Do not use circulation multipliers: • Automatic renewals • Multiple pieces of a circulating unit (e.g., multiple tapes or CDs for one book)

FSCS Stats:Reference Transactions • Annual total (1 week sample OK; multiply by 52) • Includes Reader’s Advisory, info referral • Transactions may be in-person or by phone, fax, mail, or e-mail (etc.) Exclude: Directional questions (“Where’s the bathroom?”) or questions about rules or policies (“Can I renew books?”)

Add’l Info:Children’s Programs • Number attending children’s programs: count adults who attend • “Children” = under 14 years of age • Count each event in a series (e.g. Summer Library Program) as one program • Programs may be in the library or off-site Exclude: • One-on-one programs such as tutoring

  21. FSCS Electronic Tech Survey • Licensed databases funded locally • Licensed databases funded by the state • EBSCOhost—counts as 13 • First Search –counts as 12 • Licensed databases funded through other cooperative arrangements • SWILSA genealogy database consortium –counts as 2

  22. FSCS:Library Materials in Electronic Format Include: • CD-ROM based encyclopedias • Serials on CD-ROM, tapes, or floppy disk Exclude: • Computer application software (e.g., Word or Excel) • Library system software • Software used by library staff
