Current Reality • The Need Exists: • Fresh, affordable food is not readily available to many • SNAP application/redemption rates are low, especially in Gilliam & Wheeler, especially amongst seniors • Local service agency resources are diminishing • The Barriers Are Real: • Transportation-related issues • Social and Physical Isolation • Frontier “Pioneer” Spirit • Outreach based on Existing efforts: • Community Action Program Services – LIEAHP, Regional Food Banking, Meals-on- Wheels… • Community Food Assessment (2009-10) • SNAP & Needs Assessment (2009-10) • And - New Methods & Partnerships are needed…

SNAP Outreach Capacity-Building • … “Each One Reach One”… • Partnership Development: PHFO >> Healthy Elders-Healthy Communities; OFB, Extension Service, WIC, Farmers’ Markets.. • Material Distribution: senior centers, housing complexes, feed-a-child programs, schools, LIEAHP consultations, pantries, mail • Presentations: senior centers, churches, pantries…

  5. SNAP Outreach Capacity-Building… • … “Each One Reach One”… • Actions… • Collaborative, ‘incentivized’ activities: cooking classes, food demonstrations, nutrition education activities, SNAP-matching • Capacity-Expanded: Cultivate the ‘faith brigades’; develop a “Low-Income Food Group” for on-going support, service delivery, awareness and creative response-ability • Build trust and relationships: Be patient; meet them ‘where they are’; ask open-ended questions with an open mind… • AND…What Else???
